HPB: Making Meal Planning Accessible Through Interactive Design

Designing Health Education Around Everyday Families

Healthy eating advice is widely available, but putting it into practice can be challenging for families balancing limited budgets, busy schedules and everyday responsibilities.

Recognising this, Health Promotion Board (HPB) partnered with Mashwire to develop a digital resource that makes balanced meal planning more practical and accessible for lower-income households. Rather than simply providing recipes, the objective was to help families confidently plan affordable, balanced meals while introducing healthier food choices through engaging educational content.

Mashwire conceptualised and developed an interactive eBook, complemented by an interactive A6 card that encouraged users to explore the resource via QR code. Together, the experience combined weekly meal plans, recipes, shopping guidance and educational elements into an easy-to-use digital resource for families.

Making Healthy Choices More Practical

Instead of presenting nutrition information as standalone educational content, Mashwire designed the eBook around everyday meal planning. Weekly menus were organised across four cuisines—Chinese, Malay, Indian and Western, making it easier for families to discover both familiar and new meals while learning simple ways to create balanced plates within a realistic weekly budget.

Health education was naturally woven throughout the experience, with content introducing My Healthy Plate, meal tips and Healthy Choice Symbol recommendations alongside meal plans and recipes. This allowed nutritional guidance to support everyday decision-making rather than interrupt it.

Designing An Interactive Learning Experience

Rather than producing a traditional static eBook, Mashwire created an interactive digital experience that encouraged exploration and participation.

Readers could easily navigate between weekly meal plans, spotlight recipes and educational resources through clickable menus and intuitive navigation. Practical features such as interactive shopping lists, ingredient-based meal discovery and children's activity transformed the resource into an engaging experience that families could explore together.

To complement the eBook, Mashwire also developed an interactive A6 card centred around a simple "Guess the Price" activity. By challenging users to estimate the cost of different grocery baskets before revealing that each could be assembled for under $50, the activity reinforced the message that balanced meals can also be budget-friendly. A QR code then seamlessly guided users to the eBook, creating an engaging entry point into the learning experience.

Turning Information Into Everyday Action

For the HPB Budget Meal Planning Resource, the objective was not simply to share nutritional information, but to make healthy eating feel practical and achievable for everyday families.

By combining practical meal planning, interactive design and accessible educational content, Mashwire transformed health education into an engaging digital experience that empowers families to make informed food choices and build healthier habits together.
