As buildings become increasingly energy-intensive, reducing cooling-related energy consumption has become a growing priority for Singapore's built environment. Alternative Cooling Technologies (ACTs) have emerged as a promising solution, offering energy savings of up to 48% without compromising thermal comfort or indoor air quality.
Despite their potential, ACTs remain relatively unfamiliar to many building owners, developers, tenants and members of the public. The challenge is not a lack of innovation, but a lack of understanding. Many of these technologies are highly technical by nature, making them difficult to communicate beyond engineering and industry circles.
Recognising this, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) sought to develop an educational resource that could bridge this knowledge gap and support broader awareness of ACTs. While technical information has traditionally been communicated through printed brochures and reference materials, Mashwire recognised an opportunity to better align with evolving information consumption habits. To improve accessibility and enable stakeholders to engage with the content anytime and anywhere, we recommended transforming the resource into a digital e-publication. Targeted at building owners, developers, tenants and other built environment stakeholders, the goal was not simply to explain how these technologies work, but to make their benefits more accessible, relatable and actionable for audiences involved in the planning, management and operation of buildings. As a business-to-business (B2B) communication initiative, the e-publication needed to balance technical credibility with accessibility, ensuring that complex information remained relevant to both industry professionals and decision-makers.
Making Technical Knowledge Accessible
One of the biggest barriers to adoption is complexity.
ACTs involve specialised systems, engineering principles and technical terminology that can be difficult for non-experts to navigate. While the information is valuable, dense technical content can often create distance between the technology and the people expected to adopt it.
To overcome this, Mashwire approached the publication not as a technical handbook, but as an accessible educational resource.
The focus shifted from explaining every engineering detail to helping readers understand the broader value of ACTs. Instead of overwhelming audiences with technical specifications, the content was restructured into a guided journey that progressively introduced key concepts, benefits and real-world applications.
This transformed the publication from a reference document into a learning resource designed for broader accessibility.
Turning Complex Systems into Visual Understanding
To support comprehension, complex cooling systems were translated into simplified visual narratives.
Technical diagrams were redrawn into clean infographic-style illustrations, making it easier for readers to understand how each technology functions and where it can be applied. Concepts such as Hybrid Cooling, Passive Displacement Cooling, Radiant Cooling, Active Chilled Beams and Mixed-Mode Ventilation were presented through bite-sized explanations supported by clear visual cues.
The publication also incorporated real-world examples to demonstrate how ACTs are already being implemented across Singapore. By connecting technical concepts to tangible outcomes, readers could better understand not only how these technologies work, but why they matter.
Throughout the publication, design and content worked together to simplify information without compromising technical credibility. This balance was essential in ensuring the resource remained informative for industry stakeholders while still being approachable for wider audiences.
Building Awareness Through Clarity
Effective sustainability communication is not just about providing information. It is about making information understandable.
The published ACT eBook transformed a highly technical subject into a visually engaging and easy-to-navigate educational resource. Through simplified content, custom illustrations and a structured learning journey, the eBook made ACTs more accessible to key built environment stakeholders, including developers, building owners, tenants and facility decision-makers.
More importantly, it demonstrated how strategic communication can support adoption by reducing complexity and increasing confidence in emerging solutions.
