Physical spaces are more than places people pass through. They are opportunities to communicate, engage, and influence behaviour. When integrated thoughtfully into the visitor experience, environmental touchpoints can transform everyday journeys into meaningful moments of discovery.
At Bukit Canberra Sport Centre, SportSG sought to refresh its Active Health messaging across the facility. The objective was not simply to place information within the space, but to create visual touchpoints that could capture attention, reinforce healthy lifestyle behaviours, and encourage visitors to explore Active Health programmes available within the centre.
To support this initiative, Mashwire was engaged to conceptualise and design a series of floor and staircase stickers that would integrate seamlessly into the visitor journey while remaining highly visible within a busy sports and wellness environment.
Designing For Attention In A High-Traffic Environment
Unlike digital channels where audiences actively choose what to engage with, environmental graphics must compete with movement, distractions, and the functional nature of a physical space.
Visitors entering a sports centre are often focused on reaching a destination rather than consuming information. As a result, messages need to communicate instantly, remain legible from a distance, and be understood within seconds.
The challenge was to balance visibility with simplicity. Rather than overwhelming visitors with detailed programme information, the creative approach centred on bold visual design and action-driven copywriting that could communicate a clear message within seconds
This required more than simply designing attractive visuals. The messaging itself had to work hard within a limited window of attention. Mashwire developed a series of action-driven headlines that were deliberately concise, motivational, and behaviour-oriented. Rather than promoting programmes directly, the copy focused on encouraging the outcomes and habits Active Health seeks to inspire.
Messages such as "Play Better, Live Better!", "Step Up Your Health and Fitness Game", "Feel Better, Move More", and "Build Active Habits" were designed as behavioural prompts rather than advertisements. Built around action-oriented language, each headline encourages healthier choices while creating a clear connection between the environment, the activity, and the desired behaviour. This approach helped make the messaging both relevant and actionable, reinforcing Active Health's mission of promoting sustainable lifestyle habits.
Creating A Cohesive Visual System
Rather than treating each sticker as a standalone asset, Mashwire developed a cohesive visual language that could be applied consistently across multiple locations within the facility.
Bold typography, high-contrast colour combinations, directional graphic elements, and activity-related imagery were used to create a unified identity across all executions.
Each design was tailored to its specific context. Strength-training visuals were paired with messages around functional fitness and independence. Swimming-related executions highlighted stamina and joint health. Nutrition-focused creatives reinforced the role of food in supporting active lifestyles, while general wellness messages encouraged visitors to take the first step towards healthier habits.
This modular approach ensured that every touchpoint felt connected while allowing individual messages to remain relevant to the surrounding environment.
Turning Navigation Into Engagement
Environmental graphics are often viewed as decorative additions to a space. In reality, they can play a much larger role in shaping visitor experiences.
By integrating QR codes directly into the designs, the floor and staircase stickers became more than awareness assets. They functioned as gateways to programme discovery, helping bridge the gap between physical spaces and digital engagement.
Visitors were able to encounter messaging naturally as they moved through the facility, creating multiple opportunities to discover Active Health programmes,, nutrition programmes, and wellness initiatives available at Bukit Canberra.
Through careful consideration of placement, messaging, and visual hierarchy, the designs transformed everyday pathways into communication channels that supported both wayfinding and engagement.
Making Every Touchpoint Count
The Bukit Canberra Active Health refresh demonstrates that effective communication does not always require large-scale campaigns or complex experiences. Sometimes, impact comes from making better use of the spaces people already move through every day.
By combining strong visual design, clear messaging, and strategic placement, Mashwire transformed ordinary floor and staircase surfaces into meaningful engagement touchpoints that support healthier lifestyles and greater programme awareness.
